Physical Education (Grades 9, 10, 11, 12)
Mission Statement
The mission of the Keio Academy of New York Physical Education Department is to provide a fun and positive experience in a variety of lifetime sports, leisure activities, wellness concepts, cooperative games, individual sports, team sports and outdoor pursuits. The primary objectives of our program are to provide each student with the opportunity to facilitate growth, exploration, improve skill development, and improve upon their optimal level of fitness. We challenge all students to exhibit responsible behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. We help children learn to improve their self image and promote participation in regular physical activity outside of the school environment.
Course Overview
The Keio Academy of New York Physical Education Department will follow the Sport Education Model. The Sport Education Model is based on Sport for All. In this model, students will be taught to be good sport performers and sports persons. They will learn about the skills and strategies necessary to be a good performer. Students will be taught the rules, rituals, and scoring procedures essential for appreciating sport and being a good sports person. Through this model sports are taught and played within seasons. Students will have the opportunity for both practice and competition, culminating in a final event that is exciting and rewarding for all. We will emphasize the importance of fair play so that every student can be successful. The activities will be sequenced progressively so that students are continually challenged. Tasks are planned and sequenced to match the physical, intellectual, and emotional abilities of students and to encourage those students to become increasingly better sports persons.
