HOST FAMILY Q&A

Q) What is a host family?

A) A host family is one that agrees to house and care for an international student  for a certain period of time. A host would interact with the student in a natural way by sharing conversation, meals, and family activities.

Q) How are host families chosen?

A) Prospective host families must complete an application package. Hosts are interviewed, visited and selected by administrators of the home stay program at Keio Academy of New York.

Q) What does the host family provide?

A) The host family provides a bedroom, a bathroom (shared or private), and access to common indoor and outdoor areas of the home, such as the kitchen, living and dining room, den, backyard, laundry room, etc.  The host family provides breakfast and dinner daily and lunch on days off from school. It would be expected that the student be included in the everyday life of family members.

Q) How would the student get to and from school?

A) Bus transportation to and from school is available. Keio Academy would assist the host family in making transportation arrangements for the student.

Q) What is the financial obligation involved in a home stay?

A) The host family receives a nominal monthly stipend from Keio Academy of New York to cover basic expenses.

Q) What are the advantages of a Home Stay experience?

A) Host families learn about Japanese culture from a unique perspective.  Students have the opportunity to experience American culture firsthand by living with a family for an extended amount of time. A home stay would provide the opportunity for students to use English outside of the classroom on a daily basis.
