Congratulations, Class of 2014! To parents and families, congratulations on your children’s graduation. Since 2010, when you, the current 12th grader entered Keio Academy of New York as a ninth grader, there have been many reforms pertaining to school life. The dormitory’s rules concerning nightly Study Hours have evolved so that both all of the ninth and tenth graders have started studying in the cafeteria. During the same year, the hallway policy was implemented so that the school building would remain quiet during classes. Model United Nations are held around the world to teach high school and university students about international problems and about how the United Nations attempts to solve these problems. For 12 years, students in Mr. Card’s 12th grade Political Thought class at Keio Academy of New York have participated in a Model United Nations held in New York City. Fukuzawa Yukichi Research Club members visited Obata Jinzaburo’s grave in New Jersey on April 26th, 2014. Obata Jinzaburo is a pupil who was treated kindly by Fukuzawa Yukichi. Also, he is a younger brother of Obata Tokujiro who wrote “Encouragement of Learning” View postwith Fukuzawa. Obata Jinzaburo contributed to Keio Academy. Thanks to his efforts, the plan that moves Keio Academy Shiba-shinsenza to Mita turned out well. Furthermore, he reform the school rule. He also contributed to Japan. The book “Seiyo-Gakko-Kihan” that he wrote helped Government because Meiji Gov’t didn’t have a new education system idea.  He went to America in 1871 and studied in Rutgers University. Yuki Kasama and Ryosuke Ieuji has been selected to represent Greater Northeastern United States Kendo Federation (GNEUSKF) and will participate in the 2014 All United States Kendo Federation (GNEUSKF) National Championships on June 27-29, 2014 in San Diego, California. This Tournament is held once in three years. Yuki is participating in the Senior Youth Girl’s Individual division and Team division. Ryosuke is in Senior Youth Boy’s Individual division and Team division. Let’s cheer them on!  Good luck!

On March 24th, the Cultural Exchange was provided an opportunity to visit the United Nations International School to take part in the Harumatsuri.  Student had a booth and introduced about Japanese High School students and how they may be different from typical High School students in America.  We also practiced a song for the talent show.  The students did a splendid job culturally exchanging with people of different age-group.

On Sunday October 20, 2013, 21 students volunteered at “Making Strides of Westchester, NY” held at Manhattanville College. This year since we had more students wishing to volunteer, we divided the students into 2 groups. First group directed the participants to the registration booth. The second group of students handed out “finishing stickers” to those who finished the walk and directed to the participants to the refreshment tent. The weather was pe rfect for the charity walk. According to the organizer of the walk, 16,000 walkers participated rising 1.2 million dollars.

On Sunday September 29, 2013, tea ceremony, kendo and karate club students participated in The Greenwich Japanese School Cultural Festival. Our students put on very impressive demonstrations in the front of a large audience including local dignitaries.

Maya Arii, member of our second graduating class and an emergency medicine physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and a fellow at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, received the 2nd “Symbol of Tomorrow” award, in the category of Doctors (International). “Symbol of Tomorrow” acknowledges awardees’ activities in the Medical, Health and Life Science fields  who are under 35 years of age. On Wednesday, February 27th, we were fortunate enough to have two guest speakers at the General Assembly from the United Nations. Providing lectures for our students were Ms. Eriko Yajima, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, and Ms. Junko Toda-Pichette, with the Humanitarian Field Support Section, Office of Emergency Programmes, United Nations International Children’s Fund.   Ms. Yajima and Ms. Toda shared their expericences and their backgrounds, leading to the positions they hold today. 26 students from Cultural Exchange Committee visited The Harvey School in Katonah on February 26, Tuesday. They had a great time experiencing a regular day at an American high school. With regards to the tragic incident which happened today at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, it is considered to have been an isolated occurrence, that it occurred at a distance from Keio Academy of New York. As always whenever there is a tragic incident involving children, we have been in touch with local authorities as well as continuing to be extra vigilant.  Our hearts and prayers go out to those families impacted by the tragedy that happened today in Newtown, CT.

Members of the Volunteer Club reached out to the victims of Hurricane Sandy which struck the New York area in late October. Members asked the  parents of students and staff members for donations.  In response, they received blankets, granola bars, diapers and other desperately needed items. These items were delivered to the Collection Center in the Rockways in Queens, New York through the same organization through which our students donate clothes. The “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer”walk,  sponsored by the American Cancer Society was held on Sunday, October 21st.  The walk started off at Manhattanville College, located next to Keio Academy of New York. Every year, 15,000 people participate in this event to honor breast cancer survivors, and to raise awareness about steps we can take to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.  Participants walk 5 miles (8km) around the Purchase area, and come back to Manhattanville College and the finish line. 15 Volunteer Club students from Keio Academy of New York participated in the event as volunteers.  In the morning, students held signs directing people to the survivors’ and […]

Kaede Saji (12-K) received an art award on May 17th from Mayor Ron Belmont at the Harrison Town Hall council meeting. On Friday March 30, NECTJ (Northeast Council of Teachers of Japanese) Harumatsuri (Spring Festival) was held at United Nations International School in Manhattan. The event was attended by approximately 350 local high school students who learn Japanese. This year 17 students from the student government and volunteer club participated in the event. They were asked by organizer to participate as volunteers at various Japanese culture and language learning booths. Our president of dormitory council also had an honor of acting as co-MC for the event with a student from Fukushima.

NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Choral Festival was held at Blind Brook High School on March 20, 2012, and 16 members of the Chorus Club performed there. They were conducted by Mr. Daniel Barnidge and sang the following 3 songs. -Aoba no Uta (A song of Green Leaves) by Kumagai, Kenichi -Cantate Domino by Hans Leo Hassler -Gaelic Blessing by John Rutter “Cantate Domino” was written in Latin, which was not familiar to us at all. However, they completely memorized all of the lyrics and sang fluently. Also, “Gaelic Blessing” was another challenging repertoire for them because of its complications of polyphonic melodies. We are pleased to announce that Dr. West of Mathematics was invited as a guest speaker to the 5th International Conference, which was held at Zaman University in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from March 1st to 3rd. Aashi Weekly, which is one of the publications of Asahi Shimbun (Newspaper), organized its 2000th issue English essay contest (In November, 2011. Award announced in January, 2012). Ms. Sayuri Oshima (11th Grader) was selected for award of the contest. The theme of the essay was “Next Ten Years”. She made strenuous efforts to outstand among the other selected English writing veterans. Congratulations! Keio 12th grade students Anzu Oikawa, Daisuke Hashimoto, and Manami Asano exhibited their art at the January 13 – 29th exhibition where Anzu Oikawa won an art prize for her painting. Another accomplishment we are proud of is found at the announcement of JICA Internatiional Cooperation Junior High/High School Student Essay Contest. Ms. Yoshino Sakurai (12th grade) won the Honorable Mention in High School Student section (25,359 applicants). The total number of applicants was 75,662. Student goverment, dorm council and volunteer club students conducted food drive at a supermaket in Mamaroneck on Sunday December 11. The students started early in a cold morning weather, uniformed students passionate pledges were kindly responded by the local shoppers in form of 8 over flowing shopping carts full of food items. All the foods were donated to Mamaroneck food pantry. Our students were happy to receive many thanks and encouragements from local shoppers.

On Thursday December 8 at Community Opportunity Center of Tarrytown our student representatives handed out toys donated through the toy drive at gift giving party.Through ”Westchester Community Opportunity Program Inc.” Keio Santa’s gave out toys donated through the toy drive to children experiencing  economic distress. Zion students also performed. We would like to extend most sincere thank you to all the caring and generous Keio Academy of New York community members who have donated toys and cash for this year’s toy drive effort.

After School on October 27, Karate and Zion club students were invited to perform at Asian cultural awareness event held at MasterCard Headquarter. Many MasterCard employees attended the event. After introductory speech by the headmaster, Karate students followed by Zion dancers performed. The audiences were very impressed by students’ very energetic performance; there were many “Wows” heard through out their performance.

On Sunday October 16, 20 students volunteered at breast cancer charity walk held at Manhattanville College. Eventhough it was very early in the morning (7:20 AM) our students were very active and very helpful.

There were the two major Kendo tournaments during this summer, and Keio NY Kendo Club made such accomplishments. On June 18th, there was 2nd AUSKF (All United states Kendo Federation) Junior National Open Kendo Tournament in Los Angeles. Ryoko Kambe (11th grader) was the finalist in the team competition, and Kei Takahashi (12th grader) was awarded as Best 8 in the individual competition. On August 12th, there was AUSKF 12th Championship Tournament in Atlanta. This tournament is held every 3 years. On September 15th, Keio Soccer team, Unicorns won the defending champion Byram Hills high school with 3 to 0! It was such a statement for Keio in the Class A tournament.
