The 3rd Keio Summer Program started on July 24th.

The Program consists of 2 weeks and the last day will be on August 7th. We have 79 participants this summer, and the number is the most of the past 2 years. The participants who are middle school students and whose native language is either Japanese or English are sharing dormitory rooms (for　double occupancy) together.

Like the first Summer Program in 2008, participants will work on digital media production in small groups. It is the program’s goal to enhance participants’ cross-cultural understanding and improve their communication skills by having both English and Japanese native speakers in group activities together. In 2010, the theme is “Creating your own NY experience”. Special lectures will be held by world renowned creators. Lectures in the past include: Masakzu Kubo, Japanese anime producer of “Pokemon”, and Roland Kelts, Japanese pop culture expert and author of “Jpanamerica”, etc. Lectures may involve TV conferences between Tokyo and New York giving participants the opportunity to learn their techniques and philosophies directly.

Participants have been doing many activities such as taking English as a Second Language or Japanese as a Second Language, having a trip to New York City for actual film shooting and to Broadway musical, and making their own pizza and udon(Japanese white noodles) for dinner, etc.

Model United Nations are held around the world to teach high school and university students about international problems and about how the United Nations attempts to solve these problems. Students are assigned a country and a problem facing the world. They research the country and the problem and write a “position paper” about what their country thinks should be done to solve the problem. The students then meet and try to negotiate a solution that satisfies the interests of the different counties involved.

For over twelve years, students in the 12th grade Political Thought class at Keio Academy of New York have participated in Model United Nations held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. On May 14 and 15, sixteen students from Keio Academy attended the 2010 Model United Nations, together with over 2,500 high school students from around the world.

Our students, who represented Japan and the Netherlands, made speeches and helped to negotiate solutions to such problems as the civil war in the Congo, providing affordable pharmaceuticals to people in poor nations, encouraging the development of sustainable energy, controlling diseases, such as swine flu, that infect humans from animals, and preventing genocide in nations such as Rwanda.

Our students performed very well during this intensive, two-day event and we are very proud of them!
