| Mr. Lane’s art exhibition will be held on October 20~November 24 at O.K. Harris Gallery. - Monday, September 24, 2007
Opening reception Sat. Oct. 20th 3:00-5:30pm
OK Harris Gallery

UNTITLED-B PAINT/PAPER/WOOD 85"x96" 2007
The paintings and works on paper in Stephen Lane's 2007 O.K. Harris exhibition focuses on his usage of printed material and paint as a contextual art form. Visual references and associations in his art often comes from his frequent visits to Beijing which has become a studio base In addition to his studio in New York due to his organizing and teaching at the summer studio art program at the China Central Academy of Fine Art.
Materiality is key to Lane's paintings, not simply because as concepts and ideas art works are material objects, but because Lane’s open Engagement with the context of his work will be incomplete without equal regard To the materials and the sense of time that they provide to them. Lane’s art employs paper as a historical reference. Lane’s usage of newspapers, diaries and other printed material purchased from markets in Beijing, which often date from the 1950's to current times works with the notion of intervention and removal through a process of painting over, creating a context where the echoes of a past time and contemporary issues become disconcertingly similar.
Lane's paintings reference the contextual, not because art needs to be explained by context, but because art is one of the plural contexts that define us regardless of our cultural or political background.
John Baldacchino
Columbia University, New York
August 2007
Mr. Lane’s art exhibition will be held in October 20~November 24
