Art Department Chair: Dr. Stephen Lane

Art

The Keio Academy of New York Art Department focuses on the usage and exploration of painting, drawing, and mixed media forms of art making. Art classes are designed to foster and encourage each student to develop their unique artistic language and to develop an understanding of art theory and studio practice.

With this in mind my teaching philosophy is characterized by:

  • Encouraging the philosophy of the exploration of idea and experiment in the making of art.
  • A strong commitment to teaching and exploring ideas that relates to art theory, culture, identity, and biography as it relates to each student’s art and art making process.
  • A belief that each student will begin to form an artistic perspective that will enhance their art making ability as well as their life outside of the Art department.

I believe that talent is a relative term and that the strength of each student’s art making process lies in the encouragement of self-expression, a diligent work ethic, and creative and critical thinking in their art making process, which can be strengthened by a teacher’s encouragement and belief in the potential of each student.

Fine Arts 9

The goal of this course is for students to develop an awareness of the process of art making as a means of developing a working artistic vocabulary. 9th grade art focuses on learning about color, shape and form in different media through a series of art projects.

Fine Arts 10

This courses focuses on an introduction to the material and subject possibilities in art. The art and educational focus of the class is on composition, color, paint handling, design, and mixed media. Students begin and sustain the process of creating art by dealing with diversified subjects and non-objective idioms.

Fine Arts 11

11th grade Art classes can be considered as a continuation of 10th grade art. Students are expected to attempt more challenging work. The junior year of the art sequence stresses a search for personal statement in their art making.

Fine Arts 12

In this course students are expected to develop an intensive exploration of thematic materials and techniques. In this intensified studio art program students will be expected to focus and connect the activity of creating art while developing new methods of seeing and thinking in the making of their art.
