Monday to Friday: 7:30 AM-7:30 PM
Holidays and Weekends: 12:00 PM-7:00 PM
Any changes with these hours will be posted via KANYOS immediately. In case of emergency or for any medical inquiry, a nurse is on-call whenever the office is closed.
The Health Center staff is comprised of a part-time New York State-licensed Japanese physician, three full-time registered nurses, and two part-time health center assistants. The Health Center is integral in maintaining our students' optimal health. It handles all aspects of our students' medical needs through prevention, early intervention, and treatment.
The Health Center is located on the first floor of the South Residence Hall and is easily accessible to everyone, including physically challenged individuals and emergency/ambulance personnel. The facilities include the office, examination/treatment and observation areas, a kitchenette, laundry area, and restroom. The Health Center isolation room is located on the same floor. This room is utilized by students who need to be isolated from other students while they recuperate from their illnesses.
The school doctor has been a pediatrician/internist for several years and remains active as the vice president of community affairs for the Japanese Medical Society of America. She comes once a week to Keio Academy of New York to provide free medical treatment to all students. Additionally, she is available at her own clinic on weekdays and accessible by phone in case of emergency or for consultation. All nurses are New York State-licensed registered professional nurses. They have numerous years of experience in the various facets of health care. One of the nurses and both Health Center assistants are Japanese and bilingual. All personnel are CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) certified.
The initial step to uphold the wellness of our students begins by promoting and providing preventive measures which include the annual physical examination; scoliosis, hearing and vision screenings; and immunizations as mandated by the New York State. Furthermore, we perform tests and treatments, and administer medications to deal with a range of minor ailments and injuries such as colds, sore throat, cough, fever, pain, minor rash, wounds, sprains, strains, and other sports injuries. Any students with illnesses or injuries that require further medical attention are referred to a doctor or specialist. An appointment will be made immediately and the student will be chaperoned by one of the Health Center assistants. Parents will be notified via KANYOS or e-mail upon their return from the doctor's appointment.
Student visits to the Health Center are not limited to illness or injury. They may also come to check their height and weight, order contact lenses, fix their eyeglasses, order vitamins and supplements, or just to express their thoughts and emotions. Regardless of the reason, we aim to provide the best care for all our students so that they can maximize their performance in school.
