MODEL UNITED NATIONS
Model United Nations are held around the world to teach high school and university students about international problems and about how the United Nations attempts to solve these problems. For 16 years, students in Mr. Card’s 12th grade Political Thought classes at Keio Academy of New York have participated in a Model United Nations held in New York City. On May 11 and May 12, 21 students from Keio Academy of New York attended a 2018 Model United Nations, together with over 1,000 high school students from around the world. Our students, who represented Germany in 11 different committees, made speeches and helped to negotiate solutions to important issues facing the world. The Model UN’s closing ceremonies were held in the General Assembly at United Nations Headquarters. Our students performed very well during this intense, two-day event and we are very proud of them. We would like to offer congratulations to Yuki Koyama who won an award for best research paper in the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice committee, and Mayumi Obuchi and Naho Saiki who won an award for best research paper in the UN Women committee.
We are grateful for the cooperation and support of the school’s administration, faculty, and residence faculty. We would also like to thank Mr. Abdel and the CulinArt Staff and Ms. Frankel and the AlliedBarton Security Officers for helping to make our Model UN possible. Finally, we would like to thank our wonderful chaperones, Mr. Satate, Ms. Hayami, and Mr. Kringle.
