Keio Academy of New York, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees of Keio Academy of New York has now elected Dr Townsend, a renowned educational leader who was the Headmaster of Winchester College UK 2005-2016, as its new President, effective August 1, 2019.
Dr. Townsend will be leading a reform project to bring Keio Academy of New York to global eminence comparable to leading boarding schools globally, while maintaining its tradition. To this end several reforms will include (1) introduction of admission process that does not assume proficiency in Japanese, (2) integration of boarding with academic development for a more fruitful educational experience (3) recruitment of top level teaching staff, and (4) adjusted tuition and boarding fee to support these improvements. Keio Academy of New York in close contact with Keio University is determined to undertake this reform in order to lift the school to a new level. In due course we will advise you further of the details of the reform. Parents of students already enrolled, may rest assured that we will take great care to support a smooth transition.
This reform decision has been reached after two years of analyses by the board, in close collaboration and support from Keio University, which considers Keio Academy of New York as an important member of family of institutions that contributes in talents that can effectively contribute in matters of global importance.
Dr. Townsend has been on the board of trustees since 2018 as an expert that can provide important advice to the reform. Since March 2018, he has also been working with Keio University to study how Keio Academy of New York's service to parents and students can be improved to promote the collective capability of the family of Keio University related institutions. In August 2018, Dr. Townsend was appointed as a special adviser to President of Keio University to deepen the study by making frequent visits to confer with staffs of the Keio Academy of New York. Reform plan he has put together as a result was supported by the Board of Trustees of Keio Academy of New York with a promise of support from Keio University. His appointment as the new President of Keio Academy of New York has also been approved.
