Mr. Hidehiro Honjoh is an acclaimed Shamisen (Japanese traditional three-stringed lute) artist, who arrived in the United States as a 2018 Cultural Envoy appointed by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He is currently on tour with his colleague, Mr. Akihito Obama, another rising artist of the Shakuhachi (Japanese traditional vertical bamboo flute).
On April 18th, the two young stars stopped by our campus to hold a short concert for the students in our very own Student Center. The acoustics of the auditorium amplified the sometimes powerful, and sometimes delicate and melancholic sounds of the Shamisen and Shakuhachi, seemingly transporting listeners to another dimension. Please see the photos and video clip below for a glimpse into Honjoh and Obama’s spellbinding performance.
